Spacer - Make Money Out of a Spare Room/Garage/Car Spot

TLDR/Summary:

Have a spare..

  • Bedroom?
  • Storage Room?
  • Attic?
  • Shed?
  • Garage?
  • Parking spot?

You could be making some money out of it through Spacer. Airbnb but for spare space.. and not to accommodate humans.

Spacer is yet another addition to the "peer to peer" sharing world we live in today. I believe Spacer was founded in the US, and it appears they currently only operate in US and Australia. Lucky us Australians!!

This post is written primarily from the point of view of the sharer.

The concept is a fairly simple one, not very dissimilar to many of the other peer to peer sharing concepts in existence.

Have a spare..

  • Bedroom?
  • Storage Room?
  • Attic?
  • Shed?
  • Garage?
  • Parking spot?

You could rent it out and make money out of it! This could be a good alternative to Airbnb for those that do not wish to have to "deal" with other humans - or at least at a reduced level. You'll still have to interact with someone who wishes to use your space, but compared to Airbnb you won't need to stay with them or worry about not meeting expectations around cleanliness, decor, etc. It's probably more likely you'll be able to get a long-term renter out of this for someone looking for somewhere to park their car/motorbike.

After all, this service is primarily for storing physical items/veicles. Physical items wouldn't have the same level of expectation of cleanliness, light, decor as us humans would!

In summary..

Pros

  • Make money out of a spare bedroom/garage/parking spot/attic
  • Money is wired to your account automatically (first week of every month)
  • Free to make a listing
  • Insured via IAG Sharecover - covers for removal due to overstay, lost item claims from renters, etc.
  • Your nominated desired monthly rental income is exactly what you'll receive - renter will pay a bit more to cover 15% Spacer Fee, automatically calculated by Spacer

Cons

  • 15% "commission" or "Spacer Fee" taken by Spacer
  • Insufficient volume of users thus far? Which may lead to a bit of a wait prior to being able to rent it out
    • Having said this, Spacer is probably better than any other option available in the market at the moment

I personally have recently started sharing on Spacer and had my listing rented out within a few days. However, it's still early days so I don't have too much more to add about my experience so far.

Do any of you have any experiences with using Spacer as a sharer or renter? Please feel free to leave any comments below!
